Documentation · Altline 0.4.3

Set the line. Then refine it.

A practical guide to installing, configuring and maintaining Altline without editing theme code.

Start and update

Install the theme

  1. In Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes.
  2. Upload the Altline ZIP. Keep the downloaded ZIP unchanged.
  3. Open Customize on the unpublished copy before publishing.
  4. Assign products, collections, menus and images in the editor. Preview desktop and mobile.
  5. Run a real test order with your configured test payment method before launch.
Updating safely. Duplicate the live theme first. Upload the new ZIP as a separate theme, apply merchant settings, install required app blocks and test the copy. Never overwrite or edit the only live version.

Theme settings are not automatically transferred between independently uploaded themes. Shopify apps, metafields, navigation, product data and policies remain store resources; confirm their assignments in the new theme.

Theme editor

Altline uses Online Store 2.0 JSON templates and section groups. Header and footer sections can be rearranged through their groups. The Theme settings panel contains brand colors, typography, favicon and social links.

SettingPurpose
Bone / InkPrimary light and dark surfaces.
AccentOxblood-style emphasis and selected states.
Accent for light textDarker accent used where white or bone text must remain readable.
Heading fontEditorial headings and product names.
Body fontNavigation, labels, specifications and long copy.

Use image focal points in Shopify Files or the image picker. Altline respects the focal point when it renders responsive media. Add meaningful image alt text in the media library and section fields.

The Header section accepts a logo, brand name, descriptor, main menu and fitting/service link. The default menu handle is main-menu. The footer uses footer.

Nested menus support three levels. Keep top-level labels short and group products by customer intent, such as Bicycles, Fit & sizing, Ownership and Journal. Both desktop and mobile headers expose search, cart and the native Shopify account component when customer accounts are enabled.

Home sections

Bike stage

Select a featured product and hero image. The product connection supplies the live product URL while the section controls model/category labels, heading, copy, buttons and specification blocks. If no product is selected, set an intentional fallback link.

Model range

Add one model block per highlighted series. Connect a Shopify product where possible; fallback name, price and link exist for editorial previews. Tone changes the card surface, not product data.

Brand manifesto, Club ride and Craft story

These sections establish brand purpose, community and fit process. Use original copy and licensed media. Craft process steps are blocks and can be reordered. Ownership services communicate merchant-approved fit, delivery and support promises.

Products, variants and media

Create one Shopify product for each purchasable build. Use product options for size, finish or other true variants. A recommended bicycle catalog uses Product type for the broad class, Vendor for the brand, collections for series, and variant options for Size and Finish.

  • Set a unique SKU on each variant.
  • Associate variant media with the corresponding variant.
  • Complete inventory, weight, shipping and price data.
  • Add image, video, external video or 3D model media; Altline renders Shopify rich media natively.
  • Use the Search & Discovery app to configure complementary and related products.
  • Enable local pickup on locations to populate pickup availability.

The product form supports dynamic checkout, payment terms, quantity rules, unit prices, gift-card recipient fields and app blocks. Variant selection updates price, SKU, media and availability without discarding a deep-linked variant.

Collections, filters and search

Collection and search filters come from Shopify's native filter objects. Configure them in the Search & Discovery app; do not hard-code filter labels in theme code. Altline supports availability, price, product type, vendor and variant-option filters, active filter removal, clear all, sorting and pagination.

For a bike store, useful collection structure includes All bicycles, Endurance road, Lightweight road and All-road. Useful filters include Series, Size, Finish, Intended surface and Availability—but only expose fields customers can understand and compare.

Cart and commerce

The cart page supports line-item options and properties, selling plans, line and cart discounts, quantity rules, order notes, unit prices, accelerated checkout and the standard checkout handoff. Test add, update, remove, sold-out and discount states with real store data.

Shipping rates, duties, taxes, returns, delivery promises and checkout settings are merchant responsibilities in Shopify admin. Altline displays Shopify's calculated values and does not invent operational terms.

Markets, localization and accounts

When more than one country/region or language is available, Header and Footer localization forms show the corresponding selectors. Configure Markets, domains, currencies and languages in Shopify admin and translate every published page. Do not advertise a translated experience while leaving product or policy content untranslated.

Altline uses Shopify's current account component in desktop and mobile headers. Configure new customer accounts and sign-in behavior in Shopify admin. Test sign-in, checkout return and account links in the hosted store.

App blocks and integrations

The main product section accepts blocks of type @app. Add compatible product reviews, subscriptions or other storefront apps through the Theme Editor. The theme does not bundle an app or reproduce app behavior in demo imagery.

After installing or updating an app, test the product form, cart attributes, selling plan text, keyboard operation, mobile layout and app uninstall state. App-specific implementation and billing remain with the app developer; Altline support covers the theme integration surface.

Pages, policies and journal

Altline includes Page, Contact, Atelier, Philosophy, Ownership, Fit, Policy, Blog, Article, Search, Cart, Password, Gift Card, list-collections and 404 templates. Assign alternate page templates from the Shopify page editor.

The native contact template submits through Shopify. Replace every example delivery, warranty, fit and service statement with terms approved for the merchant's real operations and jurisdictions. Blog articles support featured images, tags, dates and comments when comments are enabled.

Accessibility and performance

  • Keep headings in a logical order and button/link labels specific.
  • Provide alt text that describes the purpose of informative media; leave decorative images empty.
  • Do not remove focus indicators or reduce text contrast.
  • Keep motion optional. Altline follows prefers-reduced-motion.
  • Upload correctly sized compressed images and avoid autoplaying third-party media.
  • Test at 200% zoom, keyboard-only navigation and narrow mobile widths after content changes.

FAQ

Why do my filters not appear?

Filters must be enabled in Search & Discovery and require matching product data. Confirm the collection contains products with the selected attributes.

Why is a pickup message missing?

Pickup availability appears only when a variant has inventory at a location with local pickup enabled.

Why did settings not move to an uploaded update?

Separate theme uploads have separate settings data. Duplicate and test, then recreate the intended settings and app block assignments in the new copy.

Can I add custom code?

Duplicate the theme first. Xventure Studio supports the unmodified theme and verified theme defects; custom code and third-party modifications are outside standard theme support.

What should I send with a bug report?

Permanent store URL, Altline version, affected page URL, exact reproduction steps, expected and actual result, browser/device and a privacy-clean screenshot.
